Homebrew ORIC computer ??

Hi.

Does anyone know if someone has built/designed a 'Homebrew' ORIC computer.

I know there's normally two mindsets when it comes to recreating old computers ..
One is to use NEW FPGA type technology to emulate (and usually enhance) the original machine
And Two to use original (Legacy) ICs to produce a Retro (Old School) Machine.

Thanks

There are some projects about this matter, some old and dead, some just starting, but none completed, as far as I know.

The first one I heard about was made by Torlus, but is now discontinued
http://torlus.github.io/2014/02/09/dead ... ts-society

Godzil has a new Oric development among his projects http://www.986-studio.com/2014/03/30/re ... c-project/

And there is an interesting project which is able to load cores for different systems, one of the being an Oric, though it's still a first attempt http://zxuno.speccy.org/index_e.shtml

There is AtmoStrat too - jorodr works hard on the final version ...

I was toying with the idea of design/making my own 'Super' Oric based on a rough spec ..

W65C02 CPU (possibly clocked at up-to 8MHz+)
64K Fast SRAM (UM61512-15) 15ns
64K Fast EEPROM W27C512 45ns
A CPLD for all Glue logic , Video etc
6522 as in original
AY3-8910/YM2419 Sound Chip
SN76489 second sound Chip
V9938 as second VDP to give sprites etc.. used in Superimpose mode
8255 for CF Card as mass storage
RTC real Time clock (possibly a DS12C887)
Even an AM9511 FPU as a maths Co-processor

The CPLD might be an EPM7160SLC84 giving all original functionality plus some extra video modes. The V9938 would be gen-locked with the CPLD video logic to allow superimpose function to be used.

All 'Pie-in-The-Sky' at the moment..but one can dream !

If you are going all the way to add so many new features, why keep a 6502 instead of say 65816 :) ?

I'm loving all of these ideas .. only thing is I hope MIDI will work in the mix, somehow. Always a bit bummed about that on the Telestrat .. could've given Atari a run for the money ..

We should have a survey..too see what ORIC users would like in a New 'Super' ORIC...?? Probably come up with some very interesting ideas ?

Could have a 65C816 as a 'Second' CPU like an accelerator board with lots of RAM ?

The 65816 is supposed to have a 6502 compatibility mode, apparently there was also a 6502 pin compatible model but it seems impossible to find anymore.

Yes it's the processor used in the Apple II GS.

Western Design Centre (Home of the 6502) : They still make loads of NEW 6502 ICs

http://www.westerndesigncenter.com/wdc/

I've also seen quite a lot of NOS 6502s (from Europe, UK) on ebay

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Western-Desig ... xywXFScCtK

So there's still plenty out there !

There was also Seilebost working on FGPA Oric, Stratos 2000, and maybe other things (haven't checked in a while)
http://passionoric.free.fr/eng/
And more specifically http://passionoric.free.fr/fr/prjhard/phone.htm

Project have begun a long time ago now, so I'm not sure if they're still "on".

Free Integrated Circuits (ICs) to good Home

If you're a homebrew or DIY microcomputer builder I may be able to help you with some ICs !!

I have some surplus ICs and would like them to go to a good home, so if you're a homebrew computer builder or mess around with electronics these may be useful. It's first come first served until they have all gone !

Integrated Circuits (Chips)

R65C02Px DIP 40 6502 CPU
W65C02P DIP 40 6502 CPU
SRAMs 8K,32K,64K 128K Various DIP
EPEROM/EEPROM , Various DIP
CPLD , Altera MAX : EPM7128SLC84,EPM7064SLC44,EPM7512,EPM7256,EPM7256SQC208-10 etc)
