Can this Jasmin 2 be repaired ?

If you want to ask questions about how the machine works, peculiar details, the differences between models, here it is !
How to program the oric hardware (VIA, FDC, ...) is also welcome.

Can this Jasmin 2 be repaired ?

Post by waskol »

I found someone that would give me for almost nothing some Oric hardware (plus a ZX spectrum), here what he says about the jasmin drive that need to be repaired :

"Le jasmin : quand on boot, la disquette tourne mais il n'y a rien de plus... lorsque ca a commencé a planté...ca marchait une fois sur 3 ou 4 et puis 1 fois sur 10...etc..maintenant plus rien..."

"The Jasmin : when you boot, the floppy is spinning but nothing more...
When all of that has started, it crashed (Note of translation : the Oric ?)...
It was working once over 3 or 4 times, then once over 10 times... etc... and now it doesn't work anymore"

I would like to know if you could have an (ever slight) idea of the problem, well, if it worth to buy it
Thank you very much for your help.

it's fixable because there is nothing custom on it,

but what price does he want - and what drive is it, 3inch or 3.5?

Well, for about 100-150 euros + shipping, all of this :
-1 amstrad DMP2000 printer
-1 oric LCP40 (no ball point pens, but I guess that can still be found)
-1 zx spectrum 48k
-1 oric1
-1atmos
-1 oric1 in pieces
-1 jasmin2 (to repair)
-1 atmos in pieces....
+ about 30 floppies,
+3 or 4 commercial games on tapes
+some other with type ins
+Oric manual, the book "oric 1-atmos manuel de reference", the book "des extensions à construire pour votre Oric Atmos"
+ collection of french hebdogiciel magazine, some other magazines and the almost complete collection oh theoric (not the first ones).

the jasmin 2, if I remember well, was a double-sided 3" drive.

Well, he sells what is working, and gives with it what is not.
interesting ?

Well, the price changed :P :
Bonjour, je vendrais le tout pour 80 Euros sans le port.
J'ai la possibilité d'amener le tout en Bretagne (mes parents habitent à Auray, dans le Morbihan).
Cordialament.
I take everythink !

I will get all of these very soon, beween the 21st and the 29th of this month : I will meet the seller in Touraine where I will spend my holidays.

This person works for the french railroad company and has the opportunity to bring everyting by train near Tours. :P

When I'll be back I will surely need your advices in order to repair the Jasmin drive.

One question : is the Jasmin drive compatible with microdic formatted floppy, or does it exist any convertion tool ?

Thank you

OK, I have my new hardware and I am back to home :P

Don't need to mention that I tried the Jasmin 2 Drive on my Oric.

Sometimes it's hard to boot : it says "Booting TDOS", but nothing at all.

And when it boots, a simple !CAT"" lists all the files on the disk but finishes with a "I/O error".

I have tried to load some basic programs, and it loads some garbage instead.

I wonder what can be the problem... Of course I have checked my cables connections.

well, well, well...If only I could make it work ! :P

Well !!!
It seems that the Jasmin is working....
Because among all the disks I have, one is booting well !!! :P

I think that most of the disks were damaged by age...

Good :)
Lucky you !

The Jasmin is quite a good system I think. Just too bad it's not compatible with Microdisc.

Well, there is still something... It does not always work perfectly.

I have to try a cuple of times after switching it on before it works...
When I put it vertically, on the right side of the drive box, it reads the catalog and boots more easyly, but still then loading a program does not always work.

So, even if diskette aging might be a reason for the drive to not work properly, it is not the only reason.

Damned !...

I don't know if it can be replaced by a 3,5 inches nor how...
