Downtime: Router upgrade
Downtime: Router upgrade
Going to update the router today, our Asus RT-N66U did its job valiantly for a couple of years but did not survive the explosion in number of connected devices and internet line speed.
Hopefully the replacement will behave better!
So if you can't connect for a while, you now know why.
Of course the forum will be down during the upgrade, so you'll not going to see this message until it's actually fixed

Re: Downtime: Router upgrade
The update has been done, hopefully nothing is broken.

Nice one mate! Didn't even notice.
Wish there were some way to browse these forums on an actual Oric, lol. That might help with the bandwidth issue..

Re: Downtime: Router upgrade
Well, it's not technically impossible to do, just need to get a way to connect to the internet, and implement some specific server gateway to translate phpbb stuff to something the Oric could deal with, a bit like some of the phpbb gateways for old mobiles.
Re: Downtime: Router upgrade
Just after my message yesterday, there was a time span during which I could not connect to defence-force. But it seems everything is back ok!
Thanks, Dbug, again for the effort you put in maintaining this for us.

Re: Downtime: Router upgrade
For some reason this morning the server had decided to switch to the second ethernet port, which of course has a different ip... making the router port routing to kind of not work at all. No idea why it happened.
Hopefully that will not happen again, it's a different brand of router, different ui, different quirks

Re: Downtime: Router upgrade
Well, looks like the TP-Link Archer C3200 was not that awesome after all, it started getting wobbly last week, so I had to get back the old Asus RT-N66U back in service.
I'm going to send the Archer back for refund and get something else instead.
I was pretty happy with the RT-N66U, the only issue being that it got confused with too many mobile devices, and did not support the latest protocols, so not sure, maybe go to the direct upgrade (like the ASUS RT-AC68U), or maybe even the bigger brother (ASUS RT-AC87U)
"The RT-AC87U uses hardware NAT, which takes the load off you CPU so it can get on with other things. This improves the performance of the router significantly."
Choices... so many choices...

Re: Downtime: Router upgrade
The Asus RT-AC87U is now connected and configured.
Please signal any weird thing happening, performance issue, or non working service
Thanks!

Thanks to you, Dbug. Everything seems to run smoothly now.
Re: Downtime: Router upgrade
I've had a few timeouts this morning and at noon, but no problem since.
