Parallax?

Post by Dbug »

Hi.

Can any of you think of any Oric game that would implement either:
- nice masking of graphics over other graphics (apart Skooldaze)
- parallax/differential scrolling

I'm doing some comparative research for my game :)

Thanks :)

Um... Let me think... Maybe Oricium ;) for both, or Space 1999 for masked sprites?

Should have been more accurate: Classic games, not recent ones like the ones made by either Twilighte or Chema :)

Speaking from memory: Super Jeep, Doggy, Road Frog (Hopper), Ice Giant, Defence Force ;)
But I'm not sure if these are worthy as reference.

Not many games included masked sprites. Manic Miner does use them as well as Damsel in Distress.

Not sure about Trouble in Store...

I think Defence-Force didn't use them, nor Zorgons Revenge..

There are no stars in the "shoot em up" sequence of Zorgon's Revenge?

I think The Hellion has a two-levels stars scrolling

I try to run "hellion" downloaded from oric.org in latest version of oricutron and it fails to run for me.

Can you check it if it runs on your machine?

Runs like a charm with the latest Euphoric; fails with Oricutron 1.1 (seems like there's a loading problem leading to an Oric reboot)

It's working ok for me. Are you sure you have the latest version of Oricutron? It's up to version 1.2 now.

'Hellion' works for me in Oricutron. Emulated machine must be set to "Oric1" (i.e. not Atmos).
Else, here are the contents of 'hellion.tap':

Code: Select all

0 | 0001 .. 0003 | 24 | type:80 start:0281 end:02BF size:62 name:*
1 | 0150 .. 0152 | 24 | type:00 start:0501 end:05C5 size:196 name:The Loader
2 | 022D .. 022F | 24 | type:80 start:0400 end:04FF size:255 name:Loader2
3 | 0443 .. 0445 | 3C | type:80 start:A000 end:BFE0 size:8160 name:A
4 | 2534 .. 2536 | 3C | type:80 start:0500 end:9FFF size:39679 name:B
2nd column is file offset in hex
3th column is first byte after the '16,16,16' synchro
I don't know what this 0x3C means, but if changed to normal 0x24 loading fails.

Back to original topic: Yes, it has 2 level scrolling stars, but no masked sprites.

Thanks David for pointing me to Oricutron 1.2.
Hellion works fine on Oricutron 1.2 in Oric-1 mode, and on the latest Euphoric with any ROM (1.0 or 1.1). Strange it fails with Atmos mode on Oricutron 1.2 ?

The 0x3C thing is a special byte relpacing the 0x24, used by specific loading routines.

Yep it worked when Oric-1 mode is selected. I'd try it on atmos :) Thanks

Thanks for all the answers :)

As far as I can see, most games with parallax are doing it on stars, few are doing it with things like mountains (like Super Jeep) but it's done so there's no overlapping between the parallax plans and what the player can interact with.
